Murdishaw Wood
Description
Murdishaw Wood, Runcorn – A Calm Woodland Walk with Streams, Flowers and Your Dog
Murdishaw Wood is a peaceful woodland on the outskirts of Runcorn. It is a lovely choice for dog owners who want surfaced paths, woodland scents, open grassland, and a proper bit of nature close to town.
The wood covers around 16 hectares and sits beside Runcorn Linnets Football Club. It has three distinct sections, with Stockham Wood, Murdishaw Wood West, and Murdishaw Wood East all forming part of the wider site.
There is a varied feel as you explore. You will find semi-natural ancient woodland, grassland, streams, ponds, and pockets of seasonal colour. So, it gives dogs plenty to sniff, while owners get a walk that feels calm and interesting.
Murdishaw Wood is also connected to Murdishaw Valley. Together, the sites are designated as a Local Nature Reserve and Local Wildlife Site, which makes responsible visits especially important.
Visiting with Your Dog
Murdishaw Wood is a good option for dog walks, especially if your dog enjoys woodland paths and steady exploring.
Dogs are welcome in Woodland Trust woods, and the surfaced paths here make the site useful for year-round walks. However, keep your dog close and under control, especially around wildlife, streams, ponds, steps, steeper sections, and other walkers.
A lead may be useful near entrances, narrow paths, water, or busier areas. Also, bring bags with you, use bins where available, and help keep the woodland pleasant for everyone.
The site has multiple entrance points. The main entrance for Murdishaw and Stockham Woods is off Murdishaw Avenue, to the west of the main woodland area.
Walks, Wildlife and Woodland
Murdishaw Wood has an extensive network of surfaced paths. Some areas are steep, and there are some steps, so choose your route around your dog and your group.
Spring is a lovely time to visit, with bluebells, lesser celandine, wood anemone, and wild garlic bringing colour to the woodland floor. In summer, the meadows and grassland add a softer, open feel.
Wildlife is part of the charm here too. The woodland supports birds, bats, foxes, squirrels, butterflies, insects, and dragonflies around the ponds and streams.
The woodland mix includes oak, Scots pine, ash, sycamore, beech, rowan, cherry, hawthorn, alder, bramble, and honeysuckle. So, there is plenty to notice if you enjoy a slower, nature-led wander.
