Heswall Dales is a council-managed local nature reserve with scenic walking trails and wide views across the Dee Estuary.

Heswall Dales holds several conservation designations, including Local Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest status. Its lowland heath is one of the best remaining examples in Merseyside.

Keep your dog close and under control throughout the reserve. The heathland supports breeding birds, reptiles, butterflies and other wildlife.

A lead is sensible around wildlife, horse riders and narrower sections of the trail. Also, follow any seasonal signs displayed by the ranger team.

The paths can be uneven, sandy or slippery in places. Therefore, choose a route that suits your dog’s age, confidence and mobility.

Bring water, a portable bowl and enough waste bags for the whole walk. There are no public toilets or visitor facilities across the main reserve.

The exposed heathland can feel warm during sunny weather. So, plan regular breaks and avoid longer walks during the hottest part of the day.

Quieter visits may suit nervous dogs or pups who need more space. However, always remain aware of walkers, volunteers and horse riders sharing the landscape.

Walks, Wildlife and Landscape

Heswall Dales offers a network of paths through distinctive Western Lowland Heath habitat.

Heather dominates much of the reserve, while bell heather and western gorse bring seasonal colour. Birch scrub and European gorse also provide important nesting habitat for birds.

Triassic sandstone outcrops add another interesting feature along the routes. Meanwhile, the mixture of wet and dry heath supports a wide range of plants and wildlife.

There are several access points around the reserve. However, every route crosses rough or uneven ground, which may limit access for wheelchairs and some mobility aids.

Local volunteers and the Friends of Heswall Dales work alongside Wirral Council. Together, they support environmental projects and help protect this special landscape.
