Our Tips for Enjoying River of Light With Your Dog

River of Light is a fantastic event to enjoy together, but there are a few things worth considering before heading out.

Choose your visiting time carefully. Weekends and half-term evenings can get particularly busy. If your dog prefers quieter surroundings, a weekday visit may be more comfortable.

Consider the Quiet Hour sessions. On 28 October and 1 November, the festival will offer quieter sessions from 4pm to 5pm. These may be worth exploring if your dog is sensitive to busy environments. However, they won’t necessarily be completely silent or free from crowds.

Be mindful of interactive installations. Some artworks feature sudden sounds, music or interactive lighting effects. Allow your dog to observe from a comfortable distance and avoid putting pressure on them to approach.

Bring the essentials. Water, treats, poo bags and a familiar blanket can make all the difference. As the evenings get colder, a coat may also be useful for dogs who feel the chill.

Plan your refreshment stops. Many coffee shops will close before the installations light up at 5pm. So consider enjoying a coffee or brunch beforehand, then choose one of the dog-friendly bars for an evening break.

Take the trail at your own pace. There’s no need to tackle all 5km in one go. Splitting the route into smaller sections can make it more comfortable and enjoyable for your dog.
